class=406102118-20082007>I got this letter from Kent Stratford and sending along
for your perusal. I agree with Kent's proposal about changing the kind of
music he does on his show and that the loss of Johnny leaves a musical
void. I am confident Kent can do a good job with it. I don't
necessarily go along with the time change. It does actually make
radio sense to follow the Blues show but I still think Jim does a great job with
his show and I would feel bad replacing it. Let me know what you
think.</SPAN></FONT></DIV>

Change<BR></FONT><BR></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Hi Vic,</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I do hope all is well. I wanted to present/suggest a format change with
regard to my current program. I have become more and more aware of the void
created by the absence of Johnny Otis and the type of programming he
provided for our listeners. For example, yesterday on "Jazz For a Blue
Planet," I played a set of music that was more soulful/R&B flavored which
included Junior Parker, Ray Charles, and Louis Jourdan. During the set I
received not one, not two, but three phone calls "congratulating" me on my
selection of music. Those were the <STRONG>only</STRONG> calls I received during
the afternoon. During previous programs I have had similar positive
responses from our listeners when playing "Johnny Otis" type
format music. There is clearly a void left by Johnny. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>When "Jazz For A Blue Planet" originated, there was not much
jazz on the radio and clearly we were meeting the listening needs of our
audience. However, <STRONG>now</STRONG> you can find jazz on KFSR 18 hours a
day, seven days a week. I believe the needs of our listeners have changed.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>What I would like to suggest is a format change with regard to my current
program. Rather than straight jazz, I would like to present <STRONG>roots
music</STRONG>, obscure soul, R & B, Blues, swing, jazz (Duke
Ellingtonish).....similar to the type of programming you would hear on Johnny
Otis. Some of the featured artists would be folks like: Ray Charles, Etta James,
Pinetop Perkins, Blossom Dearie, King Floyd, Junior Parker, etc., etc. However,
the focus would be on material that was never presented much on the radio. I
believe there is a huge audience that would not only be receptive, but excited
about the change.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>For me personally, I would continue to use "The Jazz Doctor" moniker, but
it would allow me to stretch out and let more of my personality show on the air,
rather than just reading the credits from Jazz albums. Possible program titles
might be something like "Live From The Chicken Shack" or, well, you get the
idea. The three words that would describe the program and be my guiding light
would be <STRONG>fun, swing, groove, and more fun.</STRONG> Also, prior to
the first show we would promote the hell out of it. With regard to time slot, it
would seem to make more sense to follow "Blues By The Bay", (2:00-4:00, rather
than 4-6:00pm) because we would more than likely not lose that
audience. What do you think???? I will look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks.</DIV>
